Oceanside Museum of Art Welcomes Daniel Foster as New Executive Director

Daniel Foster starts his position as OMA's third Executive Director today. Considering Fosters proven track record as a leader for arts and culture in Southern California, the community has expressed overwhelming support for the Board of Trustees decision. In discussing his excitement for the position Foster says, “OMA clearly has an outstanding history of growth and success achieved by so many dedicated individuals over the museum’s 17 years, and I believe OMA is very strongly positioned for an even brighter future.  One can certainly feel the high level of talent, energy and passion at the core of OMA, and I am totally compelled to be a part of it and the San Diego regional arts community that I left nine years ago.”
Foster comes to OMA with a strong and proven career in arts, museum and nonprofit executive management and fundraising.  Over the past nine years, Foster has raised well over $25 million and has become recognized nationally for his leadership in the fields of art and philanthropy.  He will be leaving his position as President/CEO of The Community Foundation serving Riverside & San Bernardino Counties, where he oversees one of the largest nonprofit philanthropic foundations in the Inland Empire.
During his nearly four years at TCF, Foster has initiated and grown many important regional leadership initiatives focused on philanthropic/nonprofit capacity building, youth philanthropy, education, environment, and arts & culture.  This year Foster has led a comprehensive two-year effort to design, fundraise, and launch a new nonprofit arts council for San Bernardino County.  Foster leaves the 70-year-old foundation with a 2011 record-breaking year in fundraising, doubled staff from 7 to 14, and tremendously increased visibility and prominence throughout the two counties.
Before becoming President/CEO of the Community Foundation, Foster was the Executive Director of the Riverside Art Museum from 2003-2009.  During his museum tenure, Foster was widely regarded as a critical “change agent” leader for arts & culture in the region and an important catalyst for establishing the city of Riverside as the “City of Arts & Innovation.”
In 2008, Foster received the Outstanding Nonprofit Executive Director Award from the Agency Executives Association for Riverside County.  Additionally, Foster was a finalist for the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award that recognized his outstanding art museum leadership within the state of California.  Earlier in his career, Foster worked at the Headlands Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA), University Art Gallery at UCSD, and the San Diego Art Institute.
Academically, Foster received a Master’s of Fine Arts with honors in New Genres and Painting/Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Entrepreneurship/Business at the University of Southern California in 1988. Additionally, Foster has pursued three years of full-time studies in philosophy, science and studio art at the University of California, San Diego (Revelle College).
If you would like to meet Daniel Foster, he will be at the Preview Reception of OMA's upcoming exhibitions Quilt National and Fiber Dialogues on Saturday, October 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The reception is complimentary for OMA members and press and $10 for nonmembers. To contact Daniel you can reach him at daniel@oma-online.org.

What’s the Eastern Influence in your life?

Acknowledging the location of Oceanside Museum of Art on the literal edge of the Pacific Rim, Facing West / Looking East presents 20 artists who share a common interest in borrowing, recycling and sampling from the cultures of Asia for their content and commentary. Referencing multiple aspects of Asian culture from Buddhism and Yoga to ikebana and identity politics, works in the exhibition explore ideas and experiences that are an integral part of the fabric of life in contemporary California.
Facing West / Looking East reflects both California’s immigrant history and her embrace of the cultures of Asia. California’s spiritual practices, cuisine, architecture, landscaping, literature, film and music have all been significantly enriched by the diverse cultures of Asia.

Participate in the Facing West/Looking East exhibition by posting your recommendations below for the best that the cultures of Asia have to offer here in our home state of California.

How have you been influenced by the East?  Perhaps it was that Chinese water painting class you took over the summer, the best sushi house in town or a daily reflection with a cup of chai tea. How do you borrow and recycle aspects of Asian culture?
Suggestions to get you started: Haiku, Zen rock gardens, curry, silk fans, Hong Kong cinema, martial arts, bonsai gardens, green tea, anime, Feng Shui, henna, J-pop, mandala meditation… Share with us the Eastern influences in your life!

Summer Soirée Art Auction and Exhibition 2012

Summer Soirée Art Auction Exhibition

June 30 – July 28, 2012

OMA’s annual Art Auction gives you the opportunity to acquire artwork by renowned regional artists at exceptional prices while supporting the museum. Featured artwork will include paintings, sculptures, photography and works on paper by established and emerging artists. Many of the artists have a close association with OMA having been featured in past or upcoming exhibitions.

Works in this exhibition are available for purchase with all proceeds supporting future exhibitions and programs at Oceanside Museum of Art. This silent art auction is designed in conjunction with OMA's largest annual fundraiser, the Summer  Soirée, which takes place on July 28 at the Museum. The 47 works by 42 artists reflect the diversity of Southern California art and OMA's exhibition philosophy.  Many of these talented artists have a close association with OMA, having been featured in past or upcoming exhibitions.  Jim Hubbell, Charles Arnoldi and Tony DeLap will all be the subjects of solo exhibitions at OMA In 2013.

Points of departure for the artists range from the multiple narratives of Ernest Silva, Jean Lowe and Michael Summers to the cultural commentary of Raul Guerrero and Jamex and Einar de la Torre.  Other artists such as Carolyn Guild, Robert Pendleton and Lee Peterson challenge traditional perspectives of photography, bringing heightened awareness to everyday surroundings. In contrast to these literal translations, the bold nonrepresentational work of Tony DeLap, David Fobes, Bob Matheny, Ned Evans, Charles Arnoldi, Ellen Salk and Kim McConnell draw from a broad stylistic range from Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism to Pattern and Decoration.

The Art Auction opens for viewing in the Groves Auditorium Gallery on June 30 and will open for bidding at 10:00 a.m. on July 24 in the Gleason Gallery.  In order to place a bid on artwork in the silent art auction, an individual must register for a bid number at the museum admission desk or by calling (760) 435-3721 after July 24.

To place a bid, individuals will list their bid number and amount on the bid sheet or have OMA staff assist in placing a bid over the phone. For all phone bids please contact Danielle at (760) 435-3722 (phone bids will not be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on July 28.) Please observe the minimum bid noted for each item as well as the incremental bid requirement. The Silent Art Auction will close at 9:00 p.m. on July 28.
